Computing at De Bohun

Intent

At De Bohun, we acknowledge the significant role technology plays in modern life, and its increasing integration as our children grow. We understand that access to technology outside of school varies among our students, and therefore, our goal is to equip every child with the confidence to effectively utilize all forms of technology while developing a solid comprehension of computer operations. Additionally, we aspire to cultivate our students’ perception of technology as a tool for learning, innovation, and exploration.

The purpose of teaching computing in primary school is to empower students to apply computational thinking and creativity in order to comprehend and shape the world around them. Computing is intricately connected with mathematics, science, design, and technology. At its core, computing encompasses computer science, which imparts knowledge about information and computation principles, the inner workings of digital systems, and the practical application of this knowledge through programming.

As a school, we embrace out dual responsibility when it comes to online safety. Firstly, we prioritize the implementation of robust online procedures within our school to ensure the safety and well-being of children and young people. We are committed to creating a secure digital environment that promotes responsible and positive online engagement.

Implementation

In De Bohun Primary School, Computing is taught every week. In Early Years and Nursery, Computing is taught through Understanding the World, while Key Stage 1 and 2 use the NCCE scheme which has been adapted to link to our wider school curriculum wherever possible. Using our personalised curriculum, pupils will develop into proficient individuals with the skill set to program through coding and manage a diverse range of software while being conscious of the advantages and potential risks associated with the possible dangers of internet access and communication. Above all, they will possess a strong foundation in ensuring their personal safety and security.

Impact

By building upon this solid foundation, students will acquire the necessary skills to leverage information technology in developing programs and systems. Additionally, computing education fosters digital literacy among students, equipping them with the proficiency to effectively use information and communication technology to express themselves, explore new ideas, and thrive in future workplaces as active contributors and make meaningful contributions to society.

At De Bohun, we believe that use of computers will extend and improve children’s learning across the entire curriculum, and prepare them to ‘thrive’ in the modern world. Our children will be entering jobs that have not even been thought of yet – we need to prepare them for this.

Our facilities are fantastic. We have 30 computers currently set up in our specialist suite, which enables every child to have access to their own computer and classes are taught by our Subject Specialist Teacher, Ms Gregoriou. We also extend this use across the curriculum with iPads and Chromebooks, which children can use to further enhance their learning.
