Geography

Geography Curriculum at De Bohun

Intent

Geography in primary school is the study of the physical features of the Earth and the human activities that take place on the planet. It covers the study of the physical features of the Earth, the location of different places, how people interact with and use the natural environment, and the relationship between people, places, and the environment. Geography also includes the study of physical processes such as climate, weather, and landforms.

The purpose of teaching geography in primary school is to provide pupils with a better understanding of the world around them. Through the study of Geography, pupils learn about the various physical and cultural characteristics of different places, the impact of human activities on the environment, and how people interact with the environment. This knowledge helps pupils to develop a sense of place and an appreciation for the diversity of the world. Geography also helps pupils to develop critical thinking skills, enabling them to make informed decisions about environmental issues and their own activities.

Implementation

In De Bohun Primary School, Geography is taught every week. In Early Years and Preschool, Geography is taught through Understanding the World, while Key Stage 1 and 2 use the Haringey Education Partnership (HEP) scheme. Using our tailored curriculum, pupils learn how to become explorers, establish connections with other places around the world, and gain knowledge of the changes in cultural and physical environments over time.

Impact

Geography study will help pupil develop a better understanding of the world around them, from the physical environment to the cultures and people of different regions. It will also help pupils develop their critical thinking skills, as they learn how to analyse and interpret data. Furthermore, Geography will promote global awareness and intercultural understanding, as they become more aware of the similarities and differences between different countries and regions. Additionally, it will enhance pupils’ problem-solving skills, as they learn to apply their knowledge to real-world situations. Finally, Geography will help foster a sense of appreciation for the natural environment and pupils will become more aware of the importance of protecting natural resources.
